Sugar Maple at Hansen Lake

It’s changed a lot—and yet it hasn’t at all.

A child in a flowing white frock plays in the grass in a sepia-toned photo of the old Hansen homestead, circa 1930, at Hansen Lake near Park Falls, Wisconsin.

It’s changed a lot since then, but here’s what is now Sugar Maple at Hansen Lake back some time in the 1930s.

Howard “Bucky” Hansen turned this old log cabin into the incredibly comfortable and special place it is today.

Elizabeth and I are determined to honor Howard and all the Hansens for whom the lake is named by continuing to steward what we can as we invite others to discover the real “Up North.”
